About TOHGORO

The history of TOHGORO started in 1870, when a pottery shop specializing in Kyo-yaki ( a general term for pottery produced in Kyoto ), Kiyomizu-yaki ( Pottery developed around Kiyomizu temple ), was founded at Kiyomizu-zaka Slope, Kyoto.
Corresponding to the changing circumstances, the successor advanced a plan of setting up multiple shops and of diversifying its operation. Parting from the flow, aiming at a specialty shop dealing with up-to-date works, we established TOHGORO Co., Ltd. at the Chawan-zaka Slope, the birthplace of Kiyomizu-yaki, in 1992 up to the present date.
We emphasize “eternality and fluidity” as our management and pottery making concept, and aim to transmit the spirit of “admiring pottery pieces” to our customers, to realize our original motto of “benefit for everyone.”

TOHGORO ( 東五六 in Chinese character) was named after the head character of the address of Chawan-zaka Slope;
Higashi ( 東 ) yama-ku, Go ( 五 )-jo Bashi Higashi, 6 ( 六 ) Cho-me.

Nowadays, people long for peace of mind, enjoying encounter with others and contact with art works.
We, TOHGORO, through planning and marketing pottery works, will continue to let customers know the beauty and attractiveness of pottery works, and realize richness in mind,while setting value on the harmonization of tradition and contemporaneity.
